On Foothill Boulevard, the bar at The Proper keeps a drink on its permanent menu called the Yellow 2120: Old Forester, Cointreau, honey, and lemon, built by head bartender Bianca Heer earlier this year as a nod to a bear. Not a mascot bear or a marketing bear. An actual animal that has, at one point or another, moved through more backyards in this town than most human neighbors have. It's a small detail, but it says something true about how La Cañada Flintridge works. The wildlife here isn't a separate subject from the social calendar. They share a page, sometimes literally.
Right now, in the first days of September, that page is filling in fast. Music in the Park just wrapped its summer run at Memorial Park, closing out on August 30 with Boombox Heroes after a season that included acts like The Pistol Blonde a week earlier. The next stretch of civic life is already booked: a jazz night at the Community Center, a four-day hunter-jumper show that fills the town's equestrian circuit, and the biggest draw of the fall, Descanso Gardens' annual pumpkin walk. All of it lands in the same six weeks. And all of it plays out in the same foothill terrain the city's own wildlife guidance was written for.

This isn't last year's lineup dressed up in a new date range. Descanso is debuting work from Alexander Reichstein, a Helsinki-based artist whose life-sized wire sculptures, coated in UV-reactive paint, will glow through the garden's labyrinth for the first time. The neon-hued Rhizome installation that ran along the promenade last year is moving into the Oak Grove. And after years of sending trick-or-treaters elsewhere on Halloween night, Descanso is finally building it into the October 31 ticket, six to ten p.m., no separate reservation needed. If you'd rather sit down than walk the trail, the garden's new restaurant, Farmhouse, is also taking reservations for the season. Anytime tickets are new too this year, letting visitors skip picking a set date, though at $85 for non-members as of this month, they cost more than just reserving a normal night in advance.

Pull up the City of La Cañada Flintridge's website and the Music in the Park schedule sits a few clicks from a page titled Bear Safety in La Cañada Flintridge. That page opens by noting that residents here have a higher likelihood of encountering wildlife than most of the county, simply because of where the town sits against the mountains. It doesn't read like a scare page. It reads like something written by people who deal with this constantly: freeze your garbage before pickup day, take in bird feeders during spring and summer, keep bear spray by the door, and if one shows up in your yard, make noise and let it leave on its own.
The most famous local example was a bear known by her ear tag, 162, who spent years moving through backyards in La Cañada Flintridge, Altadena, and Pasadena. She swam in a resident's pool, climbed into a garage freezer for a stolen birthday cake, and became enough of a neighborhood fixture that people asked each other how she was doing. One resident who watched her for four years told LAist that despite it all, "she did not harm us in any way." Fish and Wildlife euthanized 162 in the summer of 2024 after she got into eight homes in a single month, a decision that made local news precisely because so many people here had grown genuinely fond of her.
Bears haven't stopped showing up since. Video from as recently as October of last year shows another bear walking through a La Cañada Flintridge neighborhood, and the guidance hasn't changed. Bears follow food, and this town backs directly onto the kind of oak canopy that has fed people and animals here longer than the city itself has existed.
What Carved actually walks you through after dark
Descanso Gardens sits inside that same foothill terrain. The 160-acre property was built around a forest of Coast live oaks that provided food and shelter long before the garden existed, and Carved's evening hours, six to ten p.m. every night it runs, put thousands of visitors on foot through that exact tree cover after dark. None of this means skip the pumpkin walk. It means the reminders the city posts every fall, lock the car, don't leave food or drinks sitting out in the lot, keep an eye on kids near the treeline, apply just as much to a night at Carved as they do to a Tuesday evening at home.
The practical read for the weeks ahead
A few things worth keeping in mind as the calendar fills back in:
- Skip curbside trash the night before pickup during these weeks. It's the single most common invitation, according to the city's own guidance.
- If you're hosting horse trailers or feed for the Autumn Classic, latch everything. Grain is exactly the kind of easy calorie a bear coming down from the hills is looking for.
- At Carved, keep food and drinks off the ground between installations. It's a family walk through oak cover, not just a garden path.
- If you see a bear at any of this fall's events, or in your own yard, the guidance hasn't changed: stand your ground, make noise, don't run.
None of this makes La Cañada Flintridge unusual in a bad way. It makes it a town where the wildlife never really left, even as the guest list for its fall calendar keeps growing. The same qualities that make Descanso worth walking after dark, oak canopy, foothill quiet, a route that feels miles from the 210 despite sitting minutes off it, are the reasons a bear might be walking it too, on a different night. Most people here made peace with that trade a long time ago. It's part of what living at the base of these mountains actually means, calendar and all.
